Jeanne d’Arc, or Joan of Arc, lived during the Hundred Years’ War between the French and the English, at a point when the French were suffering terribly under English control. Despite being a girl of only 16, Jeanne felt that she had a heavenly call to lead the French to victory. Wielding a sword and wearing a suit of armor specifically made for her, Jeanne inspired the French to victory, completely changing the French fortunes during the war. While she was captured and put on trial by the English, and ultimately burned as a witch, Jeanne became regarded as a hero for France, and is recognized as one of the patron saints of the nation of France. The royal blue and golden fleur-de-lis, or lily flower, are the traditional color and emblem of the kingdom of France. The three petals of the fleur-de-lis also reflect the past, the present, and the future.
